THE T.I.P.S. REVIEW: A 16-day Review
Posted April 26, 2006
R.A. Gapuz Review Center (RAGRC), through the innovative mind of Prof. Ray A. Gapuz, came up with a novel way of conducting nursing review classes. This was how the Total Innovative Personalized Supplemental Review or TIPS came about. TIPS is an entirely different method of conducting nursing review. The traditional three-month or more review has been compressed to 10-12 days without missing out any essential details vital for surpassing any nurse licensure examination. The secret formula for the success of TIPS is focus. This is because in truth, 80 percent of the time, only 20 percent of the concepts studied come out in the nurse licensure exams. And this upper 20 percent of the concepts are highlighted in the TIPS review. TIPS eradicates the need to tackle on nonessential and non-existent concepts for the nurse licensure exams. It ensures that a reviewee understands the important concepts and highlights the must-knows for every nurse. It does away with the re-teach method, instead it offers an interactive and dynamic lecture that will sustain the attention of the students and keep them from suffering information overload. Aside from these, TIPS also offers an initial learning style assessment of the students and upon identifying this, will tailor its teaching style to meet these identified learning needs. Also, an individualized assessment of the students’ performance per subject is done to ensure that the strengths and weaknesses of the students are identified and addressed as the review session progresses. With TIPS, there will be no more boring lectures and redundant and irrelevant discussions as only the important concepts will be discussed. The length of the review is immaterial to the quality of the review program being offered. Aside from this, TIPS also introduced intensive final coaching. This focuses on the honing of test-taking skills and improvement of test-taking strategies. As in any exam, knowledge is not the only way to be well-equipped but strategies and decision-making skills as well. A knowledgeable student can easily be surpassed by a student with good test-taking strategies. With all the concepts covered, it will be impossible to know everything, but through the TIPS program, strategies to getting the correct answers most of the time will be taught. Various test drills will be given and this will expose the student to the type of questions and increase the person’s mental stamina in the face of long examinations. The TIPS review can be very useful to aspiring nurses in many ways: First, it gives the nurses FOCUS. With the broad topics included in nursing, it is very easy to get lost and review on the topics that are not essential and miss out on the topics that are commonly tackled in board questions. TIPS will provide a framework for nurses to focus on. Second, it allows the nurses to take in much information without suffering from information overload. Topics are discussed to ensure comparison, better recall and long-term retention. Third, the short duration review encourages the student to exert more effort in their review and the simulated exams give them a personal analysis of their performance which serves as a good motivator for a person to study more.
